2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION


2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Harmful if swallowed.

Eye

May cause irritation.

Skin

May be absorbed through the skin.

Inhaled

Breathing dust may irritate the nose, throat and respiratory tract, causing bronchitis, coughing and chest discomfort.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Cobalt carbonate is a haematotoxin.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

If conscious, immediately induce vomiting by giving two glasses of salt water and sticking a finger down the throat. Seek immediate medical attention. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious or vomiting person.

Eye

Immediately flush eyes with lots of running water for 15 minutes, lifting the upper and lower eyelids occasionally. Seek immediate medical attention.

Skin

Immediately wash skin with lots of soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes; wash before reuse. Seek medical attention if irritation persists after washing.

Inhaled

Remove to fresh air. Give artificial respiration if not breathing. Seek immediate medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient. A Haemotological examination may be considered in some cases.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Wear protective equipment including rubber boots, rubber gloves, rubber apron, chemical goggles and respiratory protection. Avoid raising dust.

For small spills or drips, mop or wipe up and dispose of in approved waste containers. For large spills, contain using soil or other absorbent material and then pump into approved waste containers or absorb with sorbent material and place the residue in approved waste containers. Keep out of sewers, storm drains, surface waters and soil.

Disposal

Recover or recycle if possible, dispose to licensed user or disposal contractor. For container or bag dipsosal; drain thoroughly, rinse three times with soap or detergent. Send bags for recycling or other use.
